After a very busy school holidays, with more than 1,500 people taking part in our drop-in kids crafts, we are looking forward to some great new events in August. Rotorua Museum and The Rogue Stage have joined forces to bring back Music at the Museum with a fantastic line up for the first show. Selling the Dream and the 2015 Rotorua Museum Art Awards exhibitions continue to delight audiences.
Our younger visitors can come and view and purchase art in an ‘adult-free’ space as part of Muka Prints exhibition, plus much more. -

What a month June has been! We have had record numbers visit the Museum for special events including 2015 Art Awards Gala evening, Matariki Whānau Night and a special talk by Māori astronomer Dr Rangi Mātāmua. July is looking equally exciting with two new exhibitions opening: Selling the Dream celebrates vintage graphic art tourism posters, while Night & Day explores the curious collections of New Zealand artist Tony Fomison. This July school holidays allows kids to get creative in making their own artwork and even putting it on display to win great prizes.

This Sunday 31 May check out a special talk by New Zealand artist Jeff Thomson in his exhibition Corrugations. From 20 June come in and see the talented winners and selected entrants in the 2015 Rotorua Museum Art Awards Exhibition. This month we celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, with our annual Whānau Night and a talk by Māori astronomy expert Dr Rangi Mātāmua.
It is your chance to become a Rotorua Museum volunteer guide with the next training course starting on 10 June. -

In May we say farewell to the wonderful Pick & Mix exhibition and welcome a selection of works from the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust in Faces & Places, Art & History. Throughout the month we have a range of interesting talks including former Rotorua Museum Director John Perry speaking in Pick & Mix, artist Jeff Thomson talking in Corrugations and local weavers explaining traditional weaving techniques in Whiria – Weaving Global Connections. Plus, entries for the Rotorua Museum Art Awards close on Monday 4 May 2015 at 5pm, so there are only a few days left to get your registration form in.

On Saturday 25 April 2015, New Zealanders will commemorate 100 years since New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli, Turkey in 1915 – their first major engagement of World War One. This historical event has gone on to become a legend of sacrifice, and this week Rotorua Museum will be remembering those who served with a series of special activities.

In this issue you can find out where to spot the young New Zealand falcons released from Rotorua Museum earlier this year, or see an adult falcon up close when Wingspan visit the Museum to give a talk. We go behind the scenes with a tour of the Museum’s collection storage facility and there’s free entry for kids as we celebrate Children’s Day on 1 March 2015. Plus you can enjoy a couple of fantastic changing exhibitions – the fun hands-on family exhibition Body in Action or Pick & Mix showcasing more than 50 works from our collection.

The recently opened Pick & Mix is enthralling visitors with a variety of beautiful and unusual artworks chosen from our collection by staff members. There are only a few tickets left for the performances of Death of Nomad – get in quick so you dont miss out. Exhibitions closing this month include Great War Stories, David Trubridge: So Far, and Wide Horizons. Also, check out what’s happening at Rotorua Museum in December including Christmas events and a fun family day marking the opening of the interactive kids exhibition Body in Action.
