This month we are celebrating Matariki – the Māori New Year. Matariki Whānau Night is an annual event in the Museum’s calendar and this year it’s shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.
Other Matariki events include talks by Māori astronomy expert Dr Rangi Mātāmua and taonga pūoro expert, James Webster. Check out the award winning science based exhibition Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru.
Top Art 2016 showcases some of New Zealand’s top secondary school Visual Art portfolios. On for a short time only, it’s a must see.

Opening on Saturday 21 May 2016 is the fascinating Sunlight – Ihi Komaru exhibition – a fun, interactive exhibition for all ages.
Then the next day bring the kids for our Sunlight Family Day – with crafts, competitions, face painting and more.
Balls, Bullets and Boots continues this month. If you haven’t seen the exhibition already, be sure to catch it before it closes on 29 May.
Join rugby historian Clive Akers as he discusses the development of his e-book Balls, Bullets and Boots on which the exhibition is based.

April is a busy month at Rotorua Museum.
The opening of Balls, Bullets and Boots – from rugby field to battlefield begins our ANZAC commemorations and includes an online kiosk designed to explore your personal connection with the Great War.
With Easter only days away, the Great Rotorua Museum Easter Egg Hunt is perfectly timed, with new eggs, new clues and a chance to win great prizes!April means school holidays and our drop in craft activities let kids explore their creativity and engage in some early autumnal fun.
“Creativity” is the word of the month. Get creative and design a Rotorua themed tea towel, in conjunction with Every Tea Towel Tell a Story. To be into win, entries must be received by 2 April 2016.

This Saturday celebrate the children in your life and enjoy a range of free activities around Rotorua. Our new Autumn season brochure has just arrived – check it out for all our new exhibitions and events in March, April and May 2016. Every Tea Towel Tells a Story is proving popular with visitors and we are starting to get some great Rotorua themed tea towel design through for the Design a Tea Towel Competition. Celebrity Chef Richard Till will judge the winners prior to his evening event at Rotorua Museum. Later in March we are looking forward to the opening of Balls, Bullets & Boots, which takes a unique look at the link between rugby and World War One.

Rotorua Museum is having a fantastic summer with visitors enjoying our great programme of exhibitions and events as well as relaxing in the Museum Café. This weekend sees the first of our popular New Zealand falcon talks where you can get up close to these endangered birds. Places+Faces, Art+History come to an end this month however we are excited to open Every Tea Towel Tells a Story. This quirky exhibition showcases a selection of nostalgic New Zealand tea towels from celebrity chef, Richard Till.

Mere Kirihimete! Rotorua Museum has lots of events in the lead up to Christmas which include Christmas crafts and Singalong Carols. This year we are hoping the generous Rotorua community will again donate gifts and toys for families in need with the More FM Community Christmas Tree. AEIOU and Play Space exhibitions are proving very popular with families and will continue throughout the summer.
Recently opened Kuia Mau Moko showcases striking photographs by Marti Friedlander. We have organised some great events in support of this exhibition including tāmoko demonstrations and talks by kuia and tā moko artists. Have a safe and happy Christmas, -

Our last Music at the Museum for the year is being held this Sunday with the brass duo from Supergroove, Hopetoun Brown, performing their special blend of blues, stomp and soul. Tickets still available!
We have some fantastic new exhibitions opening in November including AEIOU which explores the Māori alphabet through a fun mix of objects from the Rotorua Museum collection. Also opening is Kuia Mau Moko and our new Play Space where kids (and adults) can enjoy creative play through our brand new Imagination Playground foam blocks and balls. A wide range of events includes a talk by John Perry, UkeBox, Conservation Week activity trail and a Family Day for the opening of AEIOU. -

Spring is definitely here and to celebrate Rotorua Museum has some great events for kids of all ages! During the first week of the holidays families can make tulips in our drop in crafts, and every day until 11 October children can try and Crack the Code on our brand new super-sized safe! Television personality ‘Bugman’ Ruud Kleinpaste will be visiting Rotorua Museum for our Family Day about bugs, birds and science. Get in quick to see three great exhibitions closing on the 11 October: Night & Day, Selling the Dream and the 2015 Rotorua Museum Art Awards. Don’t miss your chance to play ‘judge’ by voting for your favourite in the More FM People’s Choice Art Award.

Kia ora and welcome… Spring is nearly here and we are excited to bring you our Spring 2015 What’s On brochure showcasing a wide range of changing exhibitions and events through to the end of November. Author of Selling the Dream, Peter Alsop, will be giving a talk in this exhibition of vintage tourism posters. Following the last sold out Rogue Stage Music at the Museum show, The Wellington City Shake-‘Em-On-Downers jazz band will be performing at Rotorua Museum this month – get in quick for tickets! School holidays are nearly here and there will be lots to keep the kids busy at Rotorua Museum.
