Exhibition Engagement
Since early 2022 the Rotorua Museum team have been engaging with Rotorua locals about what our community wants to see in our new Museum exhibitions.
This data was collected from many groups, schools, events, exhibitions and presentations in the form of more than 6,300 post-it notes! We have loved hearing your great ideas for the future Museum exhibitions – they have been thoughtful, inspiring and creative!
While some engagement events are ongoing, we have collated all of the feedback so far into themes and summarised for you to look at.
Use the titles on the purple header to move through information summarised by audiences, comments on each theme and popular words in the Word Search.

The Museum team have worked closely with local Iwi over the last few years, hosting several wānanga at different marae, with more planned.
The wānanga allowed the Museum team to engage with iwi, hapū and whānau and hear special kōrero relating to taonga and iwi.
This feeds into future exhibition planning where they can ensure the stories from iwi, hapū and whānau are being re-told and delivered using their voice and through their eyes.
To date, wānanga have been held at Kearoa Marae (Ngāti Kea, Ngāti Tuara), Te Pākira Marae (Ngāi Tūhourangi, Ngāti Wāhiao), Tarimano Marae (Ngāti Rangiwewehi), Rangitihi Marae (Ngāti Rangitihi) and more recently at Tauranganui/Ōkataina Lodge (Ngāti Tarāwhai).
The next wānanga is scheduled to be held at Te Tākinga Marae (Ngāti Te Tākinga, Ngāti Pikiao) in September 2024 and the team are yet to confirm a date with Ngāti Whakaue.
Thanks to all that have provided feedback and ideas so far. We will keep you updated when we reach the next step in the exhibition development process.
