Building Project
This grand Elizabethan style building houses Rotorua Museum Te Whare Taonga o Te Arawa. It is a category one heritage building and one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand.
The Museum has operated here since 1969 but the building originally began its life as a bathhouse, attracting visitors from all over the world to ‘take the cure’ in its healing geothermal waters.
Due to earthquake-related damage in late 2016, Rotorua Museum is currently closed to the public. A project to strengthen and restore the building is underway, with the Museum expected to reopen in 2027. Check out this cool little sneak peek inside as construction starts in June 2024
